The Process ConsultantSay you are interested in finding out more about working with me. The typical questions I get asked before a process improvement project begins are:

  • How do I decide if my team will benefit from working with a process consultant?
  • How long does it take to get going?
  • How do we launch a process improvement initiative?
  • Who are you, anyway?
  • What does it cost?

A lot depends on where you are with your processes and what you want to do. If your processes are well documented but you want to improve efficiency, it might be best to start with process improvement. If your processes are chaotic and mysterious, then maybe documentation would be a better starting point.

If you call me I will try and deduce where I can be of help. If I can’t, I will do my best to point you in the right direction. But all this starts with a conversation with me, Ian James. If you are thinking of calling me, then are some quick answers to the top five questions I typically get:

Question: How do I decide if it will fit my team?


  • If you are struggling with coordination for your team, you are ready
  • You are even more ready if you have tried Kaizen or 6 Sigma and been disappointed  by the results.
  • If your team consists of highly educated, expensive to hire professionals, and you want to make them more productive, you are ready.

Question: How long does it take to get going?

Answer: Depends on what you are trying to achieve. The most cost effective way to use me is to train your team and then monitor and mentor from a distance as required.

Question: How do we launch it?

Answer: In time honored consulting tradition, I do a site assessment. This really is essential for me to  size up the problem. And you probably need to size me up, also. I will be trying to establish the following:

  • Is this really a process problem?
  • Is it something I can fix?
  • How ready is your team for tackling process?
  • Where should we start?

I will give you and anyone else in your team an onsite briefing. Assuming it is something I can help you with and you like what I am suggesting, I will produce a more formal proposal.

Question: Who are you, anyway?

Answer: I am a independent consultant. This is my area. I love working with small teams. I have worked in large corporations and run small businesses. I have been close to processes in manufacturing and services. Read more about me here.

Question: What does it cost?

Answer: My rates are in line with independent consultants in this field – and a whole lot less than than inefficient processes are currently costing your company.
